Model-based Measurement of the Articular Cartilage Thickness in the Hip Joint

Accurate assessment on the quantitative distribution of the articular cartilage in the hip joint play an important role in clinical management as well as in fundamental research. Conventional measurement method based on edge detection can introduce large underestimation errors in thickness estimation. In order to improve the accuracy of thickness estimation, we develop a new measurement method based on a model of the scanning process. The difference between the modeled and the actual gray-level profiles observed in the MR data is minimized by adjusting the model parameters. Using the phantom and the clinical MR data, the experimental results show that the new proposed method is more accurate than the conventional method. |
