Improved Method for Registering Lung Vessels Using Multi-temporal Helical CT Data
Hiroshi Hanaizumi (Hosei Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A registration method has been proposed for change detection of 3D shape of lung vessels among multi-temporal helical CT images. In the point of view of accurate detection of 3D shape change, the multi-temporal helical CT data should be perfectly registered. In the proposed method, branching points of lung vessels were extracted by applying the Successive Region Growing (SRG) method and were used as candidates of corresponding points for the following registration process. A simple skeleton matching algorithm has been applied to get the corresponding point pairs. In the registration, CT data region was divided onto trigonal pyramids so that their vertexes were the corresponding points. Voxel data in each trigonal pyramid were transformed into the corresponding one by using piece-wise Affine Transformation. The previous method, however, did not have sufficient performance in division into trigonal pyramids. Here, new method for 3D region dividing into trigonal pyramids was proposed for realizing accurate and efficient registration. In the new method, convex region which included all corresponding points was firstly obtained. The initial trigonal pyramids were made by the gravity center of the corresponding points and each triangular patch of the convex region. Then, those trigonal pyramids were recursively divided into sub-trigonal-pyramids so that all corresponding points were vertexes of the trigonal pyramids. After the division, voxels in a trigonal pyramid were transformed onto the corresponding one by using 3D Affine Transformation. Thus, all the voxels in the convex region were smoothly transformed and were accurately registered. The 3D shape change detection will be made by subtracting one from the other. The performance of the new division method was evaluated by using numerical simulation.
