The use of constraints of surrounding structures on organ shape and location is desirable in construction of statistical atlas of the organ. In this paper, the use of abdominal cavity as the surrounding structure is described and evaluated in construction of the statistical atlas of the liver. To reduce the unwanted variation between patients, we proposed two methods. One is spatial normalization based on surrounding structures and the other is statistical method using relations among shapes. We evaluate the effects of the constraints of using surrounding structures on construction of the statistical shape model. In the normalization by non-rigid registration, estimate accuracy was better than normalization by translation. In the statistical method, estimate accuracy of average shape was better than normalization by translation. |
