To monitor changes in an underground mine’ state resulting from mining activities, a monitoring system using a distributed fiber optic strain sensing system was constructed in the El Teniente mine and the applicability of the system to the underground mine monitoring was investigated through a half-year field trial. After describing the structure of and mining processes in the mine, we outlined the configuration of the monitoring system constructed in the mine, described the optical fiber sensor installation, and presented some monitoring results. The results showed that the system detected changes in the mine state due to the stress distribution imbalance produced under the undercut face and the large-scale ore extraction area. |
