The Communication Trial using Multipath Mobile IP in the Shinkansen Environment

(in English) The internet connection with wifi will be available on the Tokaido-Shinkansen in 2009. The system employs Leaky Co-aXial cable, LCX, for the ground-train link, which has a capacity of around 2 Mbps best effort. In order to respond to the speeding up request of the connection in the future, a satellite communication, a millimeter wave communication and so on have been developing. Although a satellite communication and millimeter wave communication have capacities of 30Mbps downlink and bi-directional 100Mbps or over respectively, satellites do not cover inside tunnels and the communication range of millimeter waves is not more than 100 meters. It is difficult for high speed mobile systems such as Shinkansens to obtain a broadband connection of tens of mega bps or more with a certain wireless communication medium from the both aspects of technology and cost. Therefore the communication between the ground and trains will be supplied by various communication media such as LCX, satellite communication, millimeter wave communication and so on in the future. If they are set up separately, users will have to select a communication path, this decreases the merits of the use of plural media. In order to resolve this issue this paper describes a system design, the dynamic routing and non-equivalent load balancing using Mobile IP over plural media and the results of the system trial on the Tokaido-Shinkansen.
