An Analysis of Transmission Speed Limitation in Parallel Wireless Visible Light Communication Systems

(in English) We have analyzed a transmission speed limitation in parallel wireless visible light communication systems employing a lighting fixture with white LEDs and a image sensor. In these systems, different packets are transmitted from each LED in the transmitter in parallel, and all packets are received by each pixel on the image sensor in parallel. We can increase system throughput by increasing the parallelism, and the system throughput is not limited by the response speed of each LED. However increasing parallelism is limited because the transmitter is not only used for wireless communication but also for indoor lighting. In this paper, we have analyzed the maximum parallelism in consideration of receiver SNR. From numerical analyses, cameras in mobile phones can receive data at a rate of up to 400Mbps and larger cameras can receive at a rate of up to 6.5Gbps. Even though a power consumption of a receiver limits the speed up to 2Gbps at the present moment, we can expect over 1Gbps wireless communication systems.
