In recent years, thin sheets of lossy magnetic material are widely used for suppressing disturbance currents in electronic circuits and preventing EMI emission from electronic equipment. They have many different compositions of materials but usually called Noise Suppression Sheets (NSS) in EMC fields. In order to analyze effects of the NSS on unwanted disturbances as well as wanted signals, the FDTD method is applied to a microstrip line covered with a commercially available NSS sheet. Firstly, the complex permeability is approximately given by the sum of two Lorentz dispersion formulas, which makes the FDTD applicable to a wide frequency range from 0.1 to 6 GHz. The S-parameters of a microstrip line are computed using the FDTD method and compared with actual measurements using a network analyzer. The TRL calibration is made to achieve accurate measurements. These numerical and experimental analyses reveal that an NSS causes attenuation |1/S21| (dB) proportional to the length of the NSS, while it saturates with increase in the NSS width. To evaluate adverse effects of the NSS on the signal, the group delay is calculated from the S21 given by the FDTD and also the waveform distortion of a signal is estimated for trapezoidal clock pulses (1GHz). It is concluded that an NSS may cause serious effects of the signal waveform which lead errors in digital IC performance. |
