Proposal of a Technique for Improving Robustness of Data Transfer Protocol XCP

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) XCP (eXplicit Control Protocol) is proposed as an efficient transport
protocol for a wide-area and a high-speed network. XCP is a transport-layer protocol that performs congestion control using the explicit feedback from a router. Several performance evaluations have been undertaken for XCP. However, research that focus attention to the robustness of XCP to traffic change is not done until now. In this paper, we show that the problems exist in XCP by simulation experiment.
(1) When change of XCP traffic occurs, the utilization of a bottleneck
link falls. (2) Control of XCP becomes unstabilizing in an environment where non-XCP traffic (ex. TCP, UDP, other) and XCP traffic are intermingled. Furthermore, we propose XCP-BCM (XCP with Buffer Control Mechanism) that raises the robustness of XCP to traffic change. By simulation experiment, we show that XCP-BCM has robustness to traffic change.
