A Study of Signal Conversion from Mechanical Vibration to Position Modulated Optical Pulses Using a Light Source with Periodic Wavelength Change and an Optical Tunable Filter.

(in English) A novel vibration sensor using a technique of converting the vibration into position modulated optical pulses is described. The laser light whose wavelength changes at a cycle of several kHz is launched into a fiber and passes through an optical filter whose center wavelength is changed in proportion to the mechanical movement. The output signal from the filter becomes optical pulses because the laser light passes only when the both wavelengths coincide. In case of the vibration speed is lower than kHz, time position of the optical pulses is changed according to the vibration, and thus the pulse position modulated signal is obtained. The basic operation of the scheme is experimentally confirmed using a 5-km transmission line. The light source with periodic wavelength change is obtained using a ring laser that includes a semiconductor optical amplifier and a Fabry-Perot filter. As the result, the clear optical signals with pulse position modulation are generated.
