Triceps surae muscles have been considered to play a significant role for maintaining human standing posture. However, soleus (Sol) and gastrocnemius (Gas) of its constituents demonstrate different activity pattern: Sol activity is tonic, while Gas activity is phasic. Conventional explanation of the difference is that Gas motoneuron pool has higher recruitment threshold and/or gain than Sol motoneuron pool. Here we demonstrate that such difference in muscle activity patterns can be explained without farfetched idea by considering the mechanism of the central nervous system distributing joint torque into muscles and the relationship between ankle and knee joint torques required to maintain the posture under normal gravity environment. |
