Optical waveguide switch based on movement of matching oil in microchannel driven by electrostatic force -- Fabrication technology and switching characteristics --

(in English) We propose and demonstrate an optical waveguide switch based on microfluidics driven by electrostatic force, which is suitable for low power consumption.
We developed the fabrication techniquie of microchannel with thin cover layer using the Damascene process, which is the key point of this switch.
Maxwell's stress actuates a minute droplet of liquid injected in the microchannel.

The light propagates straight through the waveguide when the droplet lies in the microchannel, while the light is completely reflected into a crossed waveguide when the droplet does not exist in the microchannel.
High extinction ratio of 33dB was obtained at the driving voltage of 250V.
The switching time was 31ms.
