Analysis of Altitude After the Implementation of RVSM

(in English) Separation minima of aircraft are defined for safety and efficiency. RVSM (Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum) was introduced on 30 September 2005 in the Japanese domestic airspace, since air traffic volumes have increased. Vertical separation minimum of aircraft flying at the altitude above 29,000ft was reduced from 2,000ft to 1,000ft in the airspace. We surveyed the air traffic volume and the altitude in the third months after the implementation of RVSM, and compared the results with that before the implementation. The number of aircraft flying at above 29,000ft increased after the implementation of RVSM. The assigned altitude is often different from the proposed altitude to keep a separation minimum from another aircraft. After the implementation of RVSM, the number of aircraft having the difference between the assigned altitude and the proposed altitude was almost same as that before the implementation. The average difference between the assigned altitude and the proposed altitude after the implementation of RVSM is smaller than that before the implementation.
