TCP extentions for improving streaming media quality

(in English) Recently, in enterprise networks and the Internet, TCP is often used instead of UDP for VoD services because of the existence of network edge devices such as firewalls and home gateways, which regard UDP packets from streaming servers as attacks from public networks and block them. While TCP can pass these devices, it often causes discontinuity of video streaming because it significantly decreases its throughput for network congestion. In this paper, we propose an extended TCP, "Streaming TCP", which achieves better video streaming quality by (i) a congestion control mechanism to maintain target bandwidth and (ii) a retransmission mechanism to improve tolerance against burst losses. Performance evaluation results in an experimental network show that the Streaming TCP can achieve continuous video streaming with a maximum of 10 times as many background TCP connections as the standard TCP can. To evaluate the effectiveness of the Streaming TCP in actual networks, we also show its performance (i) for various RTTs and (ii) for the case that multiple Streaming TCP connections coexist.
