Optical Inter-orbit Communications Engineering Test Satellite (OICETS “Kirari”) was launched on August 24, 2005, in order to conduct various experiments about optical inter-orbit communication technology for future space activity. At first, Laser Utilizing Communications Equipment (LUCE) installed on OICETS was verified various function during the initial check-out phase. And finally on Dec.9, 2005, the two-way optical inter-orbit communication was established between OICETS and Advanced relay and Technology Mission (ARTEMIS) geostationary satellite, which was developed by the European Space Agency (ESA). This success was the first ever in the world. In this paper, we describe the verification of LUCE performance during the initial functional test and the experiment of inter-orbit laser communication. |
