A waveguide magneto-optical isolator employing nonreciprocal phase shift is attractive since there is no need of phase matching which is needed in a mode-conversion isolator and causes the necessity of strict control of waveguide parameters. The nonreciprocal phase shift for TM mode is easily obtained with a planar waveguide, but that for TE mode needs a complex structure of the waveguide. We proposed a polarization-independent optical isolator utilizing the nonreciprocal phase shift for only TM mode and passive waveguide mode converters. In this paper, the proposed principle of operation and the device structure are described. And the calculated result of isolator performance is reported. |
