The next generation of mobile devices is equipped with multiple wireless access interfaces and ready for deployment. Such mobiles can use their different wireless interfaces concurrently, e.g., cellular, WLAN, WiMAX, for simultaneous data transmission. However, the combination of required spectral efficiency and bandwidth improvement is a new challenge in wireless networks that has to be considered for the design of next generation wireless access systems. This paper outlines a cognitive wireless system (CWS) that provides multimode wireless access and uses multihomed routing functions for spectrum efficient routing. Multihomed routing which allows the distribution of several flows via different multiple wireless interfaces between the access terminal and the cognitive access point (CAP) or cognitive base station (CBS) are introduced in this paper and the advantages of using multiple home addresses (MHoA) and multiple care-of addresses (MCoA) in CWS are presented. |
