Polarization Dependence of Rayleigh Backscattered Waveform measured by Coherent OTDR with Frequency Stabilized Light Source

(in English) We have been working on a novel fiber optic sensor for measuring the distributed strain and temperature in a fiber with very high resolution. This technique makes use of the jagged appearance of Rayleigh backscatter traces from a single-mode fiber measured by using a coherent OTDR with a precisely frequency-controlled light source. In order to realize this sensing technique the reproducibility of Rayleigh backscatter trace is essential, but, so far, it has not been enough. This paper shows that the Rayleigh backscatter trace depends on the polarization state of the probe pulse and the reproducibility is improved remarkably by scrambling the polarization state of the pulse. It is also shown that the Rayleigh backscatter trace changes with the laser frequency, but the original backscatter trace is reproduced by adjusting the temperature.
