Rate-Adaptive Transmission on a Wavelength Dependent Channel for Underwater Wireless Communication using Visible Light LEDs

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this paper, we propose an underwater communication that use visible light LEDs. As an alternaive against recent acoustic technologies, which operates at low data rate, optical communication can achieve high data rate. Moreover, light in visible region penetrates water the most. However absorption of water, absorption and scattering occured by dissovled particles degrade optical intensity. Therefore we analyazed the communication performance under absorption and scattering process based on scattering theory and evaluated the wavelength dependent channel. Under this channel, we proposed an wavelength selection / multiplexing scheme combined with rate-adaptive transmission to combat the change in turbidity and particle distribution underwater. Lastly, we confirmed the reliability of the analyzed results, and the possibility of the proposed system through experimental investigation.
