Effect of the Router's buffer size on TCP performance
Takeshi Tomioka, Go Hasegawa, Masayuki Murata (Osaka Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The size of router buffers are traditionally determined by the bandwidth-delay product rule, which means a product of the link bandwidth and the average round trip time (RTT) of flows passing through the router.
On the other hand, the recent research results have revealed that when the number of flows is sufficiently large,
the buffer size can be decreased to the bandwidth-delay product divided by the square-root of the number of flows ({\it sqrt-N rule}),
without introducing the under-utilization of the network link.
In this paper, we compare the performance of the above two rules for the router buffer size, focusing on the performance of TCP connections traversing the router.
Through extensive simulation experiments, we show that it would degrade the TCP performance in terms of packet loss ratio and file transmission delay, and the sqrt-N rule would enhance the network performance only when the transferring file size is between 50-100 Kbytes or when the propagation delay between the sender and the receiver hosts is significantly small.
