Character Recognition is an easy-to-introduce research theme in the field of pattern recognition. This is because we can symbolize and label character images using well standardized character codes. We can also use common databases, like the ones from ETL and NIST, for benchmarking and evaluating the accuracy of the recognition, by using comprehensive measures, such as recognition rate, rejection rate, and error rate. The first half of my talk describes the attractiveness of characters as pictorial patterns in terms of visual perception. At the end of my talk, management hints and tips for carrier-path planning to foster young researchers will be given using the pattern recognition principle. |
