Registration of pulmonary vessels for evaluating blood flow

(in English) In this paper, an algorithm that generates a subtraction image between a non-contrast CT image and a contrast-enhanced CT image via non-rigid registration is presented. It is important to evaluate blood flow in an invasive way, especially when pulmonary function is suspected to be decreased due to pulmonary diseases such as embolisms. Blood flow scintigraphy with SPECT scan is used for evaluating spatial distribution of blood flow. However, the spatial resolution of SPECT image is relatively low and therefore it is very difficult to recognize regional blood flow decrease. We have been developing an algorithm that generates subtraction images using contrast-enhanced CT images. Since CT images have high spatial resolution, the subtraction images can be useful for local blood flow analysis. In order to create high quality subtraction images, non-rigid registration of pulmonary vessels and lung parenchyma must be carried out. We used vessel enhanced images as input and performed non-rigid registration. We tested the algorithm for 10 sets of CT images and discuss about the results.
