The use of constraints of surrounding structures on organ shape and location is desirable in construction of statistical atlas of the organ. In this paper, the use of the abdominal cavity and kidneys as the surrounding structures is described and evaluated in the construction of the statistical atlas of the liver. Pre-segmentation of the abdominal cavity and kidneys is assumed. The deformation field is estimation through and non-rigid registration between patients based on the peripheral structures. We select one patient as a normalized one, and then each image data is mapped into the normalized patient space. This normalization is expected to reduce the unwanted variation between patients. Through the experiments of constructing the probabilistic atlas and statistical shape model, the effects of the spatial normalization based on surrounding structures are evaluated. |
