Studies of antimicrobial activity due to acidic electrolyzed water treatment

(in English) In second half of the 80s, the acidic electrolyzed water (acidicEW) was recognized as a strong sterilizer, because acidicEW could kill Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) effectively. Recently, it has been considered that a hypochlorous acid was produced by the electrolysis of a diluted sodium chloride solution and it acts as a bactericidal substance. However, acidicEW is not only a hypochlorous acid solution but also a strong acidic solution. Both of them show strong bactericidal activity. Therefore, the mechanism of bactericidal effects of acidicEW has not been clearly explained.
In the experiment of colony forming assay, certain bacteria disappeared within 20 seconds when 20 mg/l effective chlorine including acidicEW treatment was done. Furthermore, the addition of 0.1 mol thiosulfate inhibited the antibacterial activity of acidicEW treatment. An identification of functional DNA in Legionella pneumophila was employed for testing bactericidal mechanisms of acidicEW treatment. Gene amplification was failed by acidicEW treatment and cells growth was also unidentified. It was identified that the main substance of bactericidal activity in acidicEW was effective chlorine but other factor(s) were still remained, because the loss of colony forming ability and the failure of PCR amplification in Legionella pneumophila did not synchronized.
