This paper investigates the optimum guard interval length using cyclic prefix (CP) in Unicast channel for OFDM radio access in Evolved UTRA downlink considering both the multi-cell and isolated-cell environments.
In the evaluation, by employing delay spread, which is calculated based on the model in [6], the average received signal-to-interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) considering the Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) is calculated.
Then, the user throughput is derived through the modified Shannon formula from the calculated received SINR as a function of CP length.
Simulation results shows that, the optimum guard interval length is approximately 3 usec in a multi-cell environment suffering from large inter-cell interference.
Meanwhile, in an isolated-cell interference assuming no inter-cell interference, the optimum guard interval length becomes approximately 3 – 5 usec. Furthermore, when we take into account the path timing detection error, and if we apply the techniques, such as time windowing for reducing out-of-band emissions and the RF combining of the same data channels transmitted from the same or multiple sectors, it is advantageous to prepare additional margin of approximately 1 usec.
Therefore, the required CP length becomes approximately 4 and 4 – 6 usec for multi-cell and isolated-cell environments, respectively, and then, we conclude the optimum CP length is approximately 5 usec. |
