Leakage Loss of a Step-Index Optical Waveguide Fabricated on a Si Substrate

(in English) Substrate leakage loss of an optical waveguide fabricated on a Si substrate is analyzed using a perturbation method and a beam-propagation method (BPM). First, we extend the perturbation method derived by Ladouceur and Love to that in which polarization dependence can be evaluated.Next, the leakage loss of an optical waveguide with a square or rectangular core obtained from the perturbation method is compared with that from the BPM.Good agreement is found to exist between the perturbation method and the BPM for both TE and TM modes.
The wavelength characteristics of the leakage loss are also presented.
