Performance Evaluation of a QoS Mechanism in TCP Overlay Networks

(in English) We propose “TCP overlay network” to attain high quality communications without modifying the underlying IP networks. TCP overlay network is based on relay TCP sessions having intended behaviors, i.e., a user TCP session is terminated in the network and it is relayed by specialized TCP sessions providing specific services.
In this paper, we evaluate an overlay QoS mechanism, which relays low-priority sessions by using low priority TCP (TCP Westwood Low-Priority) to differentiate transmission quality of user sessions. The simulation results show that, by applying TCPW-LP for low-priority TCP transfers, transmission delay of RTP packets are almost halved and losses of RTP packets are suppressed. In addition, by choosing different kinds of TCPs, including TCPW-LP and regular TCP, and tuning its control parameters, TCP sessions are appropriately differentiated based on the application’s requirement.
