A new approach to estimate tree biomass based on the texture information in the high resolution polarimetric SAR images is proposed in this paper. The statistical distribution of amplitude is analyzed. Among the Rayleigh, log-normal, Weibull and K-distributions, the K-distribution is found to fit best to the data of all polarizations, although the Weibull distribution fits equally well. Then the relations between tree parameters and order parameter of the K-distribution have been investigated, and it is found that there is a strong correlation between the tree biomass and the order parameter in the L-band cross-polarization images. A remarkable feature of this result is that the order parameter increases with biomass to approximately 100 tons/ha and possibly above, which is well beyond the saturation limit of the radar cross section ( approximately 40 tons/ha for L-band RCS ). |
