An Adaptive Control of Slot Reservation Period for an Energy-Efficient MAC Protocol

(in English) In sensor networks, it is assumed the traffic in a network sometimes changes. For example, a node sleeps for the majority of the time and wakes up temporarily to send or receive packets for delivering queries or reporting event detections. We previously proposed an energy-efficient MAC protocol for sensor networks in which transmission slots are reserved in a random access period. However, there is the problem with our protocol that a slot reservation period sometimes becomes redundant when the traffic is low. In this paper, we proposed an adaptive control for reducing energy consumption by controlling the slot reservation period autonomously and dynamically. The results of performance evaluation by simulation show that our adaptive MAC is more energy-efficient than the previous work especially under a low traffic condition while the number of data packets received is not reduced.
