Distance of the auditory event with outside-the-head locatedness generated by means of earphones and subject's HRIRs

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) When we listen through earphones to binaural sounds that are convolved with our own HRIRs measured in an anechoic room, we can externalize them outside of our heads but cannot satisfy the result of distance hearing. In everyday life we hear distances by listening to sounds that contain a direct sound and reflections. In the present study, we examine how to control distance hearing with using reflections. We choose a room where we can localize sounds clearly, and measure our own binaural room HRIRs. Further we prepare virtual room HRIRs that are based on anechoic room HRIRs for one of authors and the image method theory. Trancating binaural room HRIRs from the rear with a rectangular window, we prepare several HRIR set for each DOA.
Convolving a male speech with these HRIRs, we make distance hearing experiments for HRIR-owners and other subjects.
As the results, (1) more distant outside-the-head locatedness needs such reflections that increase their energies and reduce the degree of binaural cross correlations, and (2) the trancation of HRIRs that there remain a direct sound and no reflections gives the similar localization results as in the case of using anechoic room HRIRs.
