Detection of lesions from fundus images for diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy

(in English) The number of fundus images that require examination is increasing drastically as the number of patients is increasing nowadays. CAD could be one of effective ways to reduce doctors’ hard work. This paper proposes a method for detecting lesions of diabetic retinopathy, which is one of major causes of blindness. The method consists of five processes, image normalization, identification of fundus image structure, extraction of lesion candidates, classifier selection, and classification of lesions. Novel approaches include (1) gray level normalization which is hardly affected by existence of blood vessels or an optic disk, (2) multiple classifiers and the selection of classifier according to lesion candidates’ positions. The method was tested on 55 images having lesions and 223 images having no lesion. The degrees of sensitivity and specificity are 98% and 81% respectively, and the effectiveness of the proposed method can be confirmed by the experimental results.
