Ontology based requirements elicitation method: REO
Hidetaka Tomoda, Atsushi Ohnishi (Ritsumeikan U.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Since the quality of software requirements fully depends on the ability of analyst and the knowledge of a target domain (domain knowledge), it is quite difficult for an analyst who does not have the domain knowledge to successfully elicit requirements. This paper proposes a requirements elicitation method with ontology that systematically organizes the domain knowledge. We named our method REO (Requirements Elicitation with Ontology). The ontology consists of nodes that represent functional/non-functional requirements and their 4W1H (why, when, who, where, and how) and relations including inheritance, aggregation, supplementation, and redundancy. With the hierarchy of functional requirements in the ontology, abstract requirements initially provided by a client can be detailed. With the 4W1H and with relations of supplementation and redundancy, the necessity and the validity of a requirement can be provided to the client. The REO enables a novice analyst who does not have sufficient domain knowledge to elicit valid and detailed requirements. We describe the REO and its ontology. The effectiveness of the REO will be illustrated with an experiment.
