Recently, there have been many reports on experimental demonstrations of quantum key distribution (QKD). Most of these demonstrations, however, were performed in laboratories. In this report, we describe a field trial of a quantum cryptosystem over installed fibers of Japan gigabit network II (JGNII). We used a classical channel for synchronization and status-communication for stability of the system as well as a quantum channel for photons. We have successfully demonstrated 96 km transmission between Dojima (Osaka) – Keihanna (Kyoto), and achieved 8.2 bps and quantum bit-error rate of 9.9% at m (average photon number)=0.1 photons/pulse. |
