Tele-communication systems make it difficult to use the same conversation techniques that we take for granted in face-to-face conversations. One essential technique is the ability to control the level of our voice to better express our intentions and feelings. Tele-communication systems isolate the user from his audience and make it impossible for him to assess the level of his voice as reproduced at the other sites. Our research is aimed at enhancing communication quality by giving the user the ability to control the volume of his voice as reproduced at the remote sites. Our proposal creates a ripple peak meter display of the sound field at the partner's site and overlays it on the partner's video signal. This paper describes a prototype system and the experiment conducted to assess it. The experiment confirmed that the proposed method allowed the user to easily grasp and control the level of his voice at the partner's site |
