Bandwidth-adjustable optical filter based on dynamic grating in Erbium-doped fiber with synthesis of optical coherence function

(in English) When two counter-propagating coherent light beams are launched into the pumped erbium-doped fiber (EDF), they will interfere and form standing-waves in the fiber and hence produce a dynamic grating per the phenomenon of gain saturation. A probing beam will be reflected from the induced dynamic grating when it has the same frequency as the writing beams. Based on the dynamic grating, we propose and realize a bandwidth-adjustable optical filter with synthesis of optical coherence function (SOCF). With the technique of SOCF, we can localize the interference into a short range at an arbitrary position along the fiber. In this way, the dynamic grating can be localized at a small region where the interference takes place corresponding to the peak of the coherence function. By controlling the width of coherence peak along the EDF, the reflection bandwidth is therefore adjusted since it is inversely proportional to the length of the grating. Our experiment results show that the reflection bandwidth becomes wider when we use larger modulation amplitude of the frequency modulation of light source for writing beams, which corresponds to shorter grating length. Hence, bandwidth-adjustable optical filter is realized by localizing dynamic grating in EDF with the technique of SOCF.
