Inter bony distance in the glenohumeral joint during humeral elevation

(in English) The glenohumeral joint has unstable and weak structure anatomically. On the other hand, it has wide range of motion. The soft tissue surrounded on the shoulder is damaged easily by overuse during the sports activities. These injuries create more laxities of the shoulder, and cause other serious problems of the patients' shoulder. Clinically, it is very important to evaluate the contact patterns of the shoulder quantitatively to diagnose the joint disorders. There are few reports about the contact patterns of the glenohumeral joint. These reports used the cadaver models to investigate the contact patterns. However, physicians are interested in the living subject’s contact patterns. We suggested the method of estimating the articular contact patterns of the glenohumeral joint employing an open MR system. The distance distributions between the humeral head and the glenoid fossa were computed to estimate the articular contact areas. In order to validate our method, we estimated the contact areas of the normal glenohumeral joint. The results showed that the normal shoulder, the humeral head and the glenoid fossa, has reasonable congruities during the humeral elevation.
