Wireless Sensor Networks with Local Fusion
Hiroshi Yamamoto, Tomoaki Ohtsuki (TUS)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Wireless sensor networks consisting of small sensors, data processing, and
communication ability have attracted much attention owing to the development of wireless communications and electric devices.
However, since an electric energy, a memory, and a throughput of a sensor
node are restricted, we need to improve energy efficiency of wireless sensor networks.
Moreover, if the effect of observation noise is larger, the probability that local sensor nodes make an error in the decision of the event becomes larger.
In this report, we propose wireless sensor networks with local fusion to mitigate the degradation caused by observation noise, channel noise, and fading.
In the proposed systems, first, information transmitted from local sensor
nodes are decided by a local fusion center allocated in the neighborhood of local sensor nodes.
Second, from the local fusion center to a destination node (a global fusion center), error correcting coded bits are transmitted in multihop communication.
If the effect of observation noise is larger, the systems without local fusion can not achieve required a bit error rate (BER) since the error floor is arisen on the BER performance of systems without local fusion.
While on the other hand, the proposed systems can achieve a required BER
by using local fusion.
Here, we consider two local decision schemes with majority decision and
likelihood decision.
We show that the total energy consumption of the systems with likelihood
decision is smaller than that of the systems with majority decision, when the influence of observation noise is large.
We also show that the optimal number of hops minimizing the total energy
consumption of the proposed systems depends on transmission distance between the local fusion center and the global fusion center.
