Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A number of wireless systems recently adopt adaptive modulation controls to improve frequency efficiency. The next generation broadband FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) system, which has been proposed and developed by the authors, uses quasi-millimeter band, which is vulnerable to rain attenuations, as the radio frequency of wireless links. Hence, the system equips an adaptive modulation function not only to improve the frequency efficiency but also the availability of wireless links. Although employing adaptive modulation mechanisms is becoming common among wireless systems, study results on the switching threshold for multiple modulation methods have not been reported so far. This paper introduces field experimental results on switching thresholds for adaptive modulation controls using a set of prototype equipment of the next generation broadband FWA system. The numerical results reveal that conventional scheme, in which identical switching thresholds in terms of BER are applied to all modulation methods and switching thresholds maximizing Layer-2 throughput, can neither obtain the maximum TCP throughput nor satisfy the packet loss rate of UDP traffic.
