Performance Comparison between Rate Adaptation and Multihop Route Selection in Single-Cell Cellular Systems

(in English) Multihop transmission is a key enabling technology for radio networks such as multihop cellular systems and mesh networks. One of the advantages of multihop transmission over single-hop transmission is a larger communication range. Meanwhile, rate adaptation can also control a communication range.
This paper reports an evaluation of coverage and the spectral efficiency
in single-cell cellular systems assuming multihop transmission and rate adaptation, respectively. We also evaluate the performance of multihop relaying using adaptive route selection as a function of the number of relaying stations. Numerical results reveal that multihop transmission has the same ability as symbol rate control to increase the cell radius by reducing the spectral efficiency.
