An algorithm for extracting pulmonary vascular trees from 3D X-ray CT images of a set of patients with interstitial lung disease

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Analyzing temporal changes in CT images is one of the important indices for characterizing interstitial lung diseases. Registration of multiple images scanned at different time points is required to perform such analysis. Branchpoints of pulmonary vascular trees can be landmarks for the registration. We have been developing an algorithm which extracts the vascular trees from 3D CT images.
This paper discusses an algorithm which extracts pulmonary vascular trees from thoracic 3D X-ray CT images of patients with interstitial lung diseases namely emphysema and GGO. The method we used combines tube enhancement filter and vessel tracking approaches to extract thick vessels around the hilum as well as peripheral thin vessels. We applied the algorithm to some data sets and the results are discussed.
