Visualization Method for Uterine Peristalsis Using MR Images

In this paper, we propose a visualization method for quantitative analysis of uterine peristalsis obtained by magnetic resonance images. It has been known that uterine muscle shows subtle continuous movement and the movement is called uterine peristalsis because of its wave-like motions. Correlation between direction and strength of uterine peristalsis and menstrual cycle has also been reported. Therefore uterine peristalsis is believed to play a role in transportation of sperm and implantation of the ovum. While evaluation of peristalsis has been performed in previous papers, a quantitative evaluation method has not yet been established. In our proposed method myometrial contours are extracted using an active contour model and the deformation and intensity change of myometrium are visualized. We show effectiveness of our proposed method by comparison with expert evaluations. |
