Evaluation of Traffic Policing Mechanism for TCP Traffic

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The policer monitors the amount of input traffic, and discards the packets judged to be more than a set policing bandwidth. By the use of the policer, throughputs of fixed rate traffic which each user sends are kept to a set policing bandwidth. However, TCP throughputs of each user might not be achieved, because burst-packet discards resulting from burst transmission of source terminals might cause the slow start state or the global synchronization of TCP connections. To provide bandwidth guarantee of TCP traffic, we proposed a new traffic policing mechanism for TCP traffic, which discards the packets judged as non-conformant at a certain probability to achieve TCP throughputs. However, we didn’t evaluate the effect of values set in the mechanism on TCP throughput. Therefore TCP throughputs have been only 74% of the policing bandwidth. In this paper, we estimate optimal values set in the mechanism for achieving TCP throughput equal to the policing bandwidth. And, we show that the mechanism can achieve 95% or more of the policing bandwidth as TCP throughputs by using the values.
