Pipeline structure is considered to be the best solution to overcome LSI design limitation constraints by allowing a divide and conquer design principle. In addition, it also helps us reduce wiring lengths across the chip and thus minimizing extrinsic degradations. However, with increasing clock rate, the structure also suffers from excessive power consumption and low signal integrity associated with synchronous clock distribution. A self-timed pipeline (STP) structure has been proposed to solve these problems simultaneously.
In this paper, our data-driven multiprocessor chip based on the self-timed pipeline and its application specific configurations are introduced. Furthermore, a folded pipeline scheme employed in a folded self-timed priority queue (SPQ) demonstrates another highly functional advantage of the self-timed pipeline scheme. |
