A Basic Study on Head Mounted Auditory System for Augmenting Real Sound Field

The authors have been developing augmented sound field system, as a part of augmented reality of sound. Inorder to augment sound field, it is necessary to reproduce sound field and present augmented sound. General hearing aids have a function that reproduces sound field only by controlling sound pressure, which does not consider changing the speed ofconversation and/or translating, and changing the perception of the space. We propose the system that acquires actual sound field with the microphones fixed on the headphones that cut off sound, and the augmented sound is presented with earphones in the headphones. When the proposed device is installed, ears are covered with the sound insulation headphones and there is a possibility that the sound field cannot be reproduced. In the experiment, we presented random sound from the speakers set in front or back of the subjects. The experiment showed that with the proposed device the subjects were able to judge the localization of sound sufficiently compared with some cases either using dummy head microphones or not using them. We alsoinvestigate the difference between auditory localization and actual sound localization depends on the position of microphones. |
