A Loosely Managed Privacy Protection Method using Information Entropy

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We propose a novel privacy protection method for use by service providers supplying services in which user information needs to be private in ubiquitous systems. The main feature is the use of an entropy value as a criterion for the evaluation of anonymity. This prevents loss of the convenience of services in the target environment. Objects in ubiquitous systems will include more private information than them in present systems. This is because information gathered by sensors will be added to static information such as gender and age. Furthermore, the end-to-end communication assurances that are conventionally used become more complicated. In the new method, privacy information is managed in databases on servers distributed on networks. The idea behind the method is that a calculation performed by using this database decides whether or not the provider is given access to private information. The entropy value is usually calculated independent of the number of people listed in the database, so the values are normalized every ∆t, which is unit time that can ignore the change in a user collection. We implement the proposed method and evaluate it though simulations, thus confirming its anonymity feasibility.
