The effects of a shear flow and water filtration on the uptake of macromolecules by a model of vascular wall

(in English) We prepared an EC-SMC co-culture system on a porous membrane, and investigated the effects of a shear flow and water filtration on the uptake of LDL by it. It was found that both the concentration of LDL on the surface of the co-culture and the uptake of LDL by the co-culture were higher when there was a filtration flow of water through the co-culture and shear rate was low. The results suggested that the concentration of LDL on the surface of the co-culture increased due to the water filtration, and that the uptake of LDL by the co-culture was affected by the flow-induced change in surface concentration of LDL.
