What reaction times and think aloud protocols can tell us about formulaic sequences

Formulaic sequences (FSs) are prefabricated word bundles that are found ubiquitously reoccurred in language use. Psycholinguistic research findings suggested that FSs enjoy a certain degree of processing automaticity, which leads to the assumption that there is an FS representation in native speakers' (NSs) mental lexicon. Nevertheless, the evidence is conflicting for non-native speakers (NNSs). The current study primarily attempts to address the issues of NNSs' on-line processing of Mandarin FSs, and with a threefold aim. First, a grammaticality judgment task sought to determine the existence of FS's mental representation by looking into the processing speed and accuracy of NSs' and NNSs' reading of different types of Chinese FSs. Second, a grammaticality judgment task with simultaneous think-aloud protocols examined the processing strategies that NSs and NsNSs utilized to arrive the meanings of the FSs'. Finally, results of the two concurrent data collection procedures were compared for the purpose of inquiring into the implicit and explicit knowledge that were available to the subjects as they completed the tasks. Although the reaction times of both NS and NNS groups demonstrated similar processing patterns which supported the holistic hypothesis, verbal reports suggested that only NSs comprehended most of the FSs in a unitary manner; NNSs tended to derive the meanings through decomposing the FSs, with the exception for idioms. The findings are considered in light of the relationship between psychological reality and depth of knowledge from both methodological and applied perspectives in the field of second language acquisition. |
