The sweet mind in prosocial behavior -- From the perspective of priming effect by using the chocolate scent --
Uehara Yoriko (Kansai Univ.) HCS2019-51
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In previous studies, the prosocial promoting effect of sweet scent has been confirmed. The purpose of this study was to examine indirectly whether the exposure of sweet scent as priming activates the concept of intimacy that can be associated with the concept of sweetness and promotes prosociality. The effects of chocolate scent on the expectation of altruistic behavior of participants and others was examined, and on obligatory and admirable recognition of altruistic behavior. The results showed that sweet scents marginally increased the participants’ subjective probability that participants themselves perform altruistic behavior, but it did not affect the estimation of the subjective probability that others perform altruistic behavior in daily life. In addition, participants with low sweet scent preferences in chocolate scent condition, were shown to enhance the compulsory recognition, the altruistic behavior as “ought to be done.” In the future, it will be necessary to accumulate multifaceted data in order to create a scene where cooperation is likely to occur by adjusting the environment such as fragrance.
