I have been engaged in the field of microwave engineering for approximately 25 years, including research, education, and academic society activities. In particular, within the IEICE Technical Committee on Microwaves, I have been actively involved in the Thailand-Japan MicroWave (TJMW) series, which focuses on student presentations from Japan and Thailand and aims to foster grassroots-level interactions among faculty, researchers, and engineers. I have participated in every TJMW meeting, serving as General Co-Chair for its 10th Anniversary in 2019. During the three years of the COVID-19 pandemic, we maintained collaboration with the Thai side through smaller-scale online events. In 2023, in-person meetings were resumed, and in 2024, we celebrated the 25th anniversary, counting from the predecessor joint symposium held in 1999. Over this period, I have witnessed “generational succession,” where former student participants have become faculty or researchers and now mentor the next generation. These experiences have allowed me to see the tangible outcomes of academic society activities, where researchers and engineers from different countries and institutions collaborate to advance scholarly and technical standards, build professional networks, and nurture future talent.
Regarding the recent decline in membership, I believe it is important to communicate to both researchers and supporting engineers that the society provides a rare opportunity for fair evaluation and for developing one’s own specialized field. I am committed to encouraging members to remain active after graduation and to promoting the growth of professional membership, ensuring that the vitality of the society continues into the next generation.
Dr. Kensuke Okubo received the B.E, M.E, and D. Eng. degrees in electrical engineering from the Kyoto Institute of Technology, Kyoto, Japan, in 1987, 1989, and 1992 respectively. He joined Okayama Prefectural University as a Lecturer in 1993, became Associate Professor in 1997, and Professor in 2014. From 2017 to 2019, he served as Director of the Department of Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Information and Systems ngineering. His research interests are microwave circuits including ferrites and electromagnetic metamaterials. He served as an Editorial Board Secretary for the Special Section on Recent Progress in Microwave and Millimeter-Wave Technologies in 2009 and the Editor-in-Chief for the Special Issue on University-Initiated Microwave Papers in 2019. He has actively contributed to the Thailand-Japan MicroWave (TJMW) meetings, serving in roles such as Publicity Chair(2009年), Financial Chair(2010-2016), Vice-Chair(2017, 2018), General-Co Chair(2019 - 2024). He has also held key positions in MWE, APMC. He was 2019-2020 IEEE Hiroshima Section Chair and Chair of the IEICE Technical Committee on Microwaves(2023 - 2024). He is currently Chair of the MWE 2025 Executive Committee, Vice-Chair of APMC 2026 and IEEE MTT-S Japan Chapter Chair. He is a Senior Member of IEICE and has received the IEICE Educational Service Award (2023) and IEEE Hiroshima Section Achievement Award (2024).
