The rapid advancement of electronics and information communication technology highlights the critical role the IEICE Electronics Society has played in knowledge sharing, talent development, and fostering collaboration between academia and industry. I have actively contributed to the Society's operations, serving as Chair of the OPE research group, Editor-in-Chief of the Japanese Transaction of Electronics, and currently Chair of the MWPTHz research group and Photonics related technologies committee, as well as Chair of the IEICE Kyushu Branch. As a member and mentor, I have also encouraged students to actively participate in conferences and publish papers.
However, like many professional societies, we face challenges such as declining membership and reduced participation from both industry and academia. This reflects a growing perception that academic societies provide limited value beyond the dissemination of information. To address this, I envision transforming the Electronics Society into a dynamic platform where companies, students, and educators can connect and derive tangible benefits. By creating systems that enhance the value of participation, we can reinvigorate the Society as a hub for innovation, talent development, and meaningful academic contributions. I am committed to leading this effort and making our Society a vibrant, impactful organization for all members.
Kazutoshi Kato received the B.E. degree in Physics from Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan, in 1985, the M.E. degree in Physics from Waseda University in 1987, and the Ph.D. degree in Engineering from Waseda University in 1993. In 1987, he joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), where he engaged in research and development of optoelectronics semiconductor devices. Since 2012, he has been a Professor at Kyushu University.
He has served as the Chair of the OPE and MWPTHz Technical Committees, the Editor-in-Chief of the IEICE Japanese Transactions on Electronics (Section C), and the Chair of the Kyushu Branch. He has received several honors from IEICE, including the IEICE Japanese Transactions on Electronics (Section C) Letters Award four times. He is a Fellow of IEICE.
