IEICE Bangkok Area Representative Office has been evolved since 2003 up to the current number of members around 110. In 2007, Assc Prof. Dr. Watit Benjapolakul, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Chulalongkorn University took over the Area Representative Chair from Prof. Dr. Prasit Prapinmongkolkarn, Emeritus Professor, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Chulalongkorn University and Commissioner, the National Telecommunications Commission. Currently, the Office is managed by 6 Executive Board Members, Advisory Board and 4 Committee Chairpersons working actively to generate several technical activities. Every year, one or more International Conferences in Communication are held with the IEICE's sponsorship of speeches/lectures. The updated articles of the conferences are listed as follows.

(1) In Japanese Fiscal Year (JFY) 2006, IEICE Bangkok Area Representative took part in co-organizing The AUN/Seed Net Field Wise Seminar on Multimedia Signal Processing and Communication System, Chulalongkorn University-Hokkaido University Workshop on Information Technology and Communication CHUITC'2006 on 16-17 in October, 2006 and International Conference on Digital Communication on 28 in November, 2006.

(2) In JFY 2007, IEICE Bangkok Area Representative took part in co-organizing International Conference on Telecommunication, Industry, and Regulatory Development ICTIR'2007 on 19-21 in August, 2007. We honored the Keynote Speech by Mr. Takashi Hanazawa from NTT Corporation, Japan. IEICE special session on Advances in Telecommunication Technology was also performed with Invited Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Kenzo Takahashi.

(3) In JFY 2008, IEICE Bangkok Area Representative will take part in co-organizing International Symposium on Multimedia and Communication Technology ISMAC'2009 on 22-23 in January, 2009. IEICE special session on Advances in Telecommunication Technology is also planned with Invited Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Kenzo Takahashi. IEICE executive board meeting is also planned during the symposium to discuss expected activities in the JFY 2009 and also to discuss the scheme to promote higher number of membership.

Apart from activities taken place in Bangkok, IEICE Bangkok Area Representative Board members also regularly attend IEICE Overseas Meeting in Japan. On March 22, 2007, IEICE Bangkok Area Representative dispatched Prof. Prasit, Assoc. Prof. Watit, and Asst. Prof. Supavadee to attend IEICE Overseas Representative Meeting in Nagoya. Professor Prasit received an award from IEICE for his contribution as IEICE Bangkok area chair. On March 20, 2008, Assc. Prof. Watit attended IEICE Overseas Meeting in Kyushu.

From the past experiences with the closed collaboration and coordination among Thailand and Japan Technical Societies, our missions are to contribute to academic and research activities in a wider range that hopefully would give a significant impact to Science and Engineering world.

2008 China-Japan Joint Microwave Conference ( CJMW 2008 ) successfully held
IEICE Electronics Society

The 2008 China-Japan Joint Microwave Conference was held in the Hua-Ting Hotel, Shanghai, China, pictured in Fig.1, September 10-12, 2008, under the auspices of sponsorship by the Electronic Society of the IEICE, the Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE), the Microwave Society of CIE, the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), and Shanghai University, China.

Since the first conference in Dalian in 1994, this conference has been held in major cities of China every 2 years to promote the progress of microwave technologies in China, Japan, and other Asian countries. The number of submitted papers has increased over time, and 205 papers including 21 invited papers were accepted this year. The number of accepted papers by country is summarized in Table 1. This year there were 243 attendees, including 185 Chinese, 40 Japanese, 3 Taiwanese, 3
Russians, 2 Poles, 2 Egyptians, a Korean, a Singaporean.

The conference was commenced with the welcome addresses by Prof. Min Wang, CJMW2008 General Co-Chair, China; Prof. Futoshi Kuroki, CJMW2008 General Co-Chair, Japan; Microwave Society, China Institute of Electronics; and Prof. K. K. Mei, CJMW2008 TPC Co-Chair, China.

After that, there were 6 keynote speeches (Fig. 2). The speakers, who were carefully selected from the viewpoint of state-of-the-art technologies, were Prof. Hung-Chia Huang, Shanghai University, China, "Microwaves and Special Fiber Optics"; Prof. Pei-Heng Wu, Nanjing University, China, "Sensitive Detection of Teraherz Signals Using Superconducting Devices"; Prof. Tsukasa Yoneyama, Tohoku Institute of Technology, Japan, "Recent Advances in the NRD-Guide Based Millimeter-Wave Technology"; Mr. Masaru Sato, Fujitsu Laboratory, Japan, "InP HEMT MMIC for Ultra High-speed and Ultra Low-noise Applications"; Prof. S.T. Peng, Yuan Ze University, Taiwan, "Overview of Microwaves: Taiwan Perspectives"; and Prof. Y. P. Zhang, Nanyang Technical University, Singapore, "A Vision of the Second Century of 60-GHz Radio".

The technical sessions were simultaneously held in 4 rooms with active discussions in the fields of electromagnetic theories, numerical analysis, passive and active microwave circuits, antennas, radio systems, radar systems, microwave-optical wave interactions, and so forth.

Planning for the next CJMW, which will probably be held in Tianjin or Guilin, China, is now under way. We are looking forward to seeing you at the next CJMW in 2010.
